One of the most critical steps in any painting task is priming the surface to ensure it is suitable for a smooth and even topcoat. While we offer several high quality primers from Benjamin Moore, a bonding primer is one of the most effective choices—especially for surfaces with unique challenges.
Our team of painting experts at Supershade South wants your project to be successful, and that’s where we can step in to help. Here, we are delighted to discuss the benefits and frequently asked questions of a bonding primer and what it does to prepare your painting surface to achieve maximum results. We’ll recommend a couple of our favorite options, so read on to learn more on what bonding primer is, and what it does from our team at Supershade South.
So, the questions remain: what is bonding primer, and what does it do?
Bonding primer is a special type of primer specifically formulated to adhere to hard-to-cover dense or porous surfaces such as treated wood, metals, plastics, glasses, tiles, and glazed stone surfaces.
Bonding primer is perfect when painting surfaces that resist adherence. Its chemical composition allows it to adhere to surfaces better than regular primers. It creates a thick film over the surface, preventing peeling, cracking, and fading. If you are about to tackle a challenging surface, a bonding primer is your best choice.
Though we don’t recommend using bonding primer over peeling paint, you can cover almost any area where a low surface temperature may be a bad fit for other primers.
Typically, you should only have to apply one coat of bonding primer, but it all depends on the condition of your surface and how many coats of paint you want to apply. If your surface is greatly compromised, then using two coats is wise. This will also reduce the number of coats of paint you apply.
Not all bonding primers are self-leveling. If you’ve selected one that is not, sanding is a necessity to create a smooth surface for your paint or topcoat. Use fine-grit sandpaper so that you do not damage the surface. Sanding will allow for superior adhesion and durability.
INSL-X® STIX® Waterborne Bonding Primer is an acrylic primer that is the perfect base for topcoats. INSL-X® STIX® Waterborne Bonding Primer is also low-VOC, which means is has a low level of volatile organic compounds when compared to other brands and primers. Great for hiding stains, this primer can even be sanded and recoated in as little as two hours and cleans up easily with soap and water.
Corotech® Waterborne Bonding Primer is a one-component primer that bonds to metals such as structural steel, railings, and shop coat surfaces for a solid foundation for finishing coats. Ideally, you can use this primer in mild to moderate exposures, which is appropriate for USDA-inspected facilities.
Corotech® Waterborne Bonding Primer is well-suited for chrome, brass, copper, aluminum, galvanized metal, and stainless steel.
