Your cabinets play a key role in your kitchen’s overall interior design. If you’re looking for an easy way to transform your kitchen, then painting cabinets is a game-changer, simplified by using high-quality paint.

That’s where our team at Supershade South can step in to help. Today, we discuss the benefits of cabinetry painting, introduce two of our favorite Benjamin Moore paints for cabinetry, and we’ll share some useful tips for painting your cabinets with Benjamin Moore paint.

The Benefits of Painting Cabinets

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Whether it be in a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, or other space in your home, upgrading your cabinets with a fresh coat of paint will instantly transform your space with a new take on color. Whether you’re looking for a neutral to match with existing finishes or interested in adding an accent with a dark, rich hue or bright, bold, color, with over 3,500 choices, the Benjamin Moore paint you choose depends on your style.
  • Increased Home Value: Painting your cabinets is like giving your space an instant facelift. If you plan to sell your home, a fresh coat of paint will provide you with the curb appeal you need to impress potential buyers.
  • Affordability: Instead of spending a lot of money to replace your cabinets, painting cabinetry is a more cost-effective way to enhance your home with a new style.
  • Time Saver: While an entire remodel of your kitchen and bathroom might be a someday goal, renovations are lengthy processes that wear and tear on your personal life. Painting can take place in as little as one weekend.

A Few Tips for Painting Your Cabinets

Painting cabinetry can be daunting, but following these helpful suggestions will be rewarding without any undue stress.

  • Start with Room Prep: Painting your cabinets can be messy, so be sure to properly prep the room by marking off areas you don’t want painted with painter’s tape and draping your floors and surfaces with drop cloths to protect your flooring and finishes.
  • Disassemble Cabinetry: Remove the parts of cabinetry that you can, carefully labeling each one. Start with the doors and drawers and mark them accordingly. If you do not mark them, reassembly can be a disaster. Then, remove all of the cabinetry hardware, as it will make it easier for you to paint around.
  • Surface Prep: Paint will have trouble adhering to a dirty or ultrasmooth surface, so use a degreasing solution to remove the dirt and grime from your cabinet surfaces. For surfaces that have cracks or uneven areas, fill them in with wood filler to create a seamless surface.
  • Sand Your Cabinetry: If your cabinets are in good condition, you can skip sanding to preserve their existing finish. After degreasing, use a 100-grit or 120-grit sandpaper or sanding block to get them to a smooth surface. M
  • Tip: Make sure the areas are clean and free of sanding dust and debris before moving on to the next steps.
  • Prime: Prime each part of the cabinetry surface with an oil-based or alkyd primer. You will achieve better paint adhesion and coverage on a primed surface. Work from the inside nearest the interior or wall first and then paint out toward the room and let your doors dry before flipping and priming the other side.
  • Sand and Paint: Once the primer is dry, it’s time to apply the paint. Like with priming, paint from the inside nearest the interior or wall first and then paint out toward the room. Use a clean dry brush or roller to remove excess paint or buildup—this will prevent texture or drips.
  • Reassemble: After the paint thoroughly dries, reassemble your cabinetry and enjoy.
  • Tip: You can swap out the hardware or scub the old hardware and use a metal-safe spray paint once fully dreid to give old hardware a new.
